The Yucatán Peninsula is home
to a wealth of both modern and ancient wonders. As the cradle of the Mayan
Civilization, one can visit hundreds of architectural sites in the Yucatán.
|
There are literally thousands of restored Mayan pyramids, temples and
houses that were buried for centuries deep within the jungle.
|
The Mayan ruins of central America are from cities that fell into decline long before Columbus. But many of the traditions reflected in the architecture and art from these sites live on in the modern Mayan world.

Mérida, the capital of the
Yucatán, captures both the ancient and the modern worlds.
One can visit the oldest Cathedral in the Americas and go shopping at one of the
numerous shopping centres all in one day!
Mérida is located approximately
in the centre of the Yucatán Peninsula. |
Progreso
To the north of Mérida
(approx. 35 km) is the growing fishing village of Progreso, known for
its fine seafood dining and popular beaches. The port of Progreso is also a destination stop for cruise ships.
In the next 14 months, Progreso will receive 190 cruises, with 250,000 tourists.
38 trips during November and December and a total of 150 trips during 2003.

Modern locations such as Cancún
and Playa del Carmen have put the area on the map as one of the premier
tourist destinations on the planet.
The Playa Maya Resort complex is located
approximately 90 km. west of Mérida and a few kilometers to the
north of the small fishing village of Celestún. This ideal location
offers a quieter more relaxed atmosphere than traditional tourist destinations
in the Yucatán. Residents will have all the ancient wonders and
modern conveniences that the Yucatán has to offer right at their
doorstep.
At this time, we invite you to visit
the official web site of the Ministry of Tourism for the State of Yucatán,
México. The site, which can be displayed in both English and Spanish,
contains a wealth of information on commerce, industry, tourism, handcrafts,
rural development, fishing, general interest and sports.
