Where is Playa Maya?
Playa Maya Resorts is located on the Yucatan's northwest coast, on the Gulf of Mexico. It's about 90 km (56 miles) west of Mérida, the capital of the Yucatán and about 6 km north of a small fishing village named Celestún.
Celestun is situated west of Merida on the Gulf of Mexico side of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is only a 1 hour drive from Merida's International Airport.
The Town:
Celestun means "painted stone". It is a picturesque coastal traffic port, with a revolving reflector lighthouse, 12 meters high, signaling 4 intermittent flashes. Its inhabitants, about 4,600, still preserve the traditions and folklore of the Mayan fisher folk. Celestún is a small fishing village and bird sanctuary on the Gulf of Mexico in the Western Coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. Inland waterways provide a natural habitat for flamingoes, herons and other tropical birds.
