How to get to Playa Maya
Regularly scheduled airlines provide the most flexibility and availability of flights. Mexicana Airlines, AeroMexico, Delta, Continental, American and others provide service to the Yucatan. Major car rental companies and government-regulated taxis are at the airports.
From the Merida International Airport to
Celestún is about 90 kilometers (56 miles) west on the western shore of a small peninsula. Public transportation is offered several times a day from Merida. It is only a hour drive from Merida if you have a car. Rentals are available in Cancun or Merida at the airport.
Merida to Celestún Driving Instructions: Take the road "Itzaeles" out of the south end of Mérida (near the airport) to the town of Uman.
From Uman, there is a newly constructed road which leads directly to the town of Kintchil. From Kintchil take road #281 which goes directly to Celestún.
Cancun, which is only 180 miles (300 km) away, has a major internatintonal airport with services arriving from all over the world. There is frequent bus service from Cancun to Merida at low cost.
NOTE: Driving tip
Remember that making a left turn in Mexico is not the same as back home. On the highway, a routine left hand turn signal could be mistaken as a "safe to pass" indication.
So you could get broadsided while turning and it would be your fault.
It is customary to pull off to the right hand side of the road, let traffic pass and then turn left when both directions are clear.
